What to expect during a consultation

You are welcome to bring another adult – partner, grandmother, doula – to your visit, but it is not necessary – whatever works best to you.

During our visit, we will talk a lot! As Lactation Consultants, we like to hear the whole story of what has happened so far: a little about your pregnancy, some about your birth, and everything about how breastfeeding has gone so far. We will ask you about your health history – and your baby’s, where appropriate – and we will ask you to describe your main concerns.

We will weigh and examine your baby, including a visual and digital assessment of their mouth and sucking ability. We will watch you latch and position your baby, offering suggestions and new strategies where helpful. We will weigh your baby a number of times to assess your baby’s ability to get milk from your breasts. We will work together toward getting your baby latching and breastfeeding effectively and comfortably.

We encourage you to ask lots of questions and share concerns.

We will collaborate on a care plan that works toward solving your problem and feels manageable to you. If appropriate, we may refer you to a specialist health care provider. A full report will be sent to your baby’s care provider; a report may also be sent to your provider as well.

We will provide you with a insurance superbill that allows you to claim reimbursement from your insurance company; whether they reimburse depends on your policy. You can also use the superbill to claim reimbursement from your Health FSA.

After your visit, we like to stay in touch by phone or email every few days until you feel that your problem has been resolved. You are also welcome to attend our weekly drop-in clinic as long as you like.

We strongly encourage clients to keep in touch with us until they feel fully confident that their problems are resolved and they are enjoying their breastfeeding relationship.
